phpBB mods on Bishopston Net Forums (Server: catflap)
Last Updated: December 15 2009 20:04 GMT - Jamie Jones.

All source code changes etc. made by me are available on request. - Please see my MODS forum : http://phpbbmods.bishopston.net/

  1. My changes to make all forums use a common code base.
  2. Applying the Phpbb contributed "template caching" system.
  3. Installation of package mod-profilcp (by Ptirhiik - http://RPGnet.clanmckeen.com/demo/)
  4. Installation of package mod-post_icons (by Ptirhiik - http://RPGnet.clanmckeen.com/demo/)
  5. Installation of package mod-last_topics_from (by Ptirhiik - http://RPGnet.clanmckeen.com/demo/)
  6. Installation of package mod-mods_settings (by Ptirhiik - http://RPGnet.clanmckeen.com/demo/)
  7. Installation of package mod-lang_settings (by Ptirhiik - http://RPGnet.clanmckeen.com/demo/)
  8. Installation of package mod-topics_list (by Ptirhiik - http://RPGnet.clanmckeen.com/demo/)
  9. Installation of package mod-topics_calendar (by Ptirhiik - http://RPGnet.clanmckeen.com/demo/)
  10. Installation of package mod-advanced_pm (by Ptirhiik - http://RPGnet.clanmckeen.com/demo/)
    - And changed it to report in the page-header the number of unread messages if there are no new messages, but there are some unread.
    - And also highlight the page-header message in red if there are some new or unread messages.
  11. My changes to mod-profilcp to make the 'visual confirmation code' less facist.
It was 8 characters, case dependent, from A-Z,a-z,0-9, now
it is 5 characers, case independent, from A-Z

  12. Installation of package mod-merge (by Ptirhiik - http://RPGnet.clanmckeen.com/demo/)
  13. Installation of package mod-topic_display_order (by Ptirhiik - http://RPGnet.clanmckeen.com/demo/)
  14. Installation of package mod-keep_unread (by Ptirhiik - http://RPGnet.clanmckeen.com/demo/)
  15. Removed Ptirhiik's "board founder" attribute.
  16. My changes to make all forums use common IMG url's for ALL images and audo (http://media.forums.bishopston.net/...)
  17. Get rid of all the CARRIAGE-RETURN shite! ( ^M )
  18. Written and installed a new auth-level of "NO-ONE" to admin panel, to disable a particular feature per forum for EVERYONE (even admins) - this stops us poor admins getting forms for polls and calendars appearing when we post to forums where such options are not used.
  19. Added admin-configurable "page header" and "page footer" HTML data sections.
  20. Found, modified, and installed text-input bbcode javascript so that inserted smileys and bbcode appear at the cursor position instead of at the end of the message (previously, on mozilla at least, they would always be placed at the end) Also, written and installed bbcode to ensure that on mozilla, any selected/highlighted text is still selected/highlighted after a change font/change size etc. operation is carried out. - Thanks to David Harris for pointing out that it was even possible to wrap size/font changes around selected/highlighted text at all !
  21. Written and Installed user-settable "message-filters" to be applied to each read message!
  22. Gotten rid of all links to "index.php" (replaced with links to ...../ etc.)

  23. Altered overall_header template / page_header include file to not output the stylesheet information in the header, but link it instead *IF THE CSS FILE EXISTS*. If the CSS file doesn't exist, the css-in-html-header will be output as normal. This gives the best of both worlds, in that a static stylesheet file can be installed for popular styles, without 'breaking' the ability for admins to dynamically alter styles/themes in the admin panel.

  24. Installation of Photo Album V2.053 (by Smartor (smartor_xp@hotmail.com) (Hoang Ngoc Tu) http://smartor.is-root.com) And a number of changes and tweaks by me, including adding gallery reference ID, adding more options to the personal gallery index (date of last comment, and date of last rating, and date of last picture etc.), renaming "photo album" to "gallery", and also making the images browser-cachable to save on bandwidth. Also, adapted album_pic and album_thumbnail to work with GIF image types (now GD2 supports it), and fixed a wee bug where the mime-header wasn't being sent for newly created thumbnails. Also, changed file permissions from 0777 (!) to 0640.

  25. Added to "photo album" : album_watermarking mod (Rhygin ( rhygin@ragga-jungle.com) (Rhygin) http://www.ragga-jungle.com)
  26. Added to "photo album" : album_next_previous_fix (by PenP)
-- I also fixed a bug where it would not work correctly inside a users personal gallery (it would jump to someone elses gallery!!)
  27. Written and added a piece of code to show beneath the users avatar etc. in "viewtopic" the number of pictures that person has posted to the gallery.
  28. Installation of mod-karma (based on idea by Nome (nome@bk.ru)) - though since rewritten by me, adding extra facilities, such as showing karma per post etc. and each user has an allocation of karma points to give out. They gain some points (configurable by admin) every night up to a ceiling value (configurable by admin). They also get fractions of a karma-to-give point (again, configurable by admin) on receipt of positive karma, and potentailly lose fractions of a karma-to-give point (again, configurable by admin) if they receive a negative karma... There is no longer a user tallly of postive and negative - just an overall total. However, each post shows postitive and negative karma attributed to that post. Karma yesterday and karma the day before is shown alongside a users karma. Admins may allocate specific karma-to-give points to anyone via the admin panel. Users may also disable their karma (unless admin doesn't allow them)
  29. Installation of mod-admin_email_list (by Jamer (Colin James) http://www.jamer.co.uk/scripts/phpbb2)
  30. Installation of mod-rate_topics (by Nivisec (Billy Sauls) http://www.nivisec.com/)
  31. Installation of mod-admin_email_search (by Craven de Kere (N/A) http://www.Able2Know.com)
  32. Installation of mod-post_count_resync (by Adam Alkins - adam@rasadam.com - http://www.rasadam.com/)
  33. Installation of mod-validate_email (by Niels (ncr@db9.dk) (Niels Chr. Rĝd) http://mods.db9.dk)
  34. Installation of mod-admin_mass_delete (by Antony Bailey & Freakin' Booty ;-P) -- needed heavy changes (as did the 'standard' delete) to cope with the mod-advanced_pm, mod_gallery, mod_rate etc..
  35. Installation of mod-advanced_report (by S. Praetorius (s2b@toennessen.com) - http://www.s2b-forum.de.vu)
    - with a number of tweaks by me
  36. Written and installed mod-web_links - my code to allow a list of links on the main index page.

  37. Written and installed apache, awk, and phpbb patches to remap urls as follows:
    • viewtopic.php?p=456 -> topic_with_post_456.html
    • viewtopic.php?t=456 -> topic_456.html
    • viewforum.php?f=2 -> forum_2.html

  38. Written and installed mod-site_desc - my code to allow a different site description whether the user is logged
in or not, and to give the option to provide a random site description (pulled in from the "nonsense"
program) in either or both cases.
  39. Modified the posting screen html so that the message and subject boxes scale in size to the users browser window-size (useful for people with bigger screens etc.)
  40. Written and installed code to show the "topic title" in a 3rd level of links on the "posting page" when replying to a topic or to an individual post. i.e. BOARD NAME -> FORUM NAME -> TOPIC TITLE
This is handy if you forget what topic you are replying to. It also doubles up as a link that takes you back to the topic without posting. (the link back to viewtopic points back to a post id if you were replying to a post with 'quote' or the general topic id otherwise) - at least this way, if you are aborting a quoted reply to a post, you'll be taken back to the same sub-page if the topic spans many pages. If you are posting a NEW POST instead of a reply, this 3rd level of link doesn't exist.
The information is also put into the HTML TITLE : "Post a Reply - "
To make things consistent, it is also put into 'viewtopic.php' as : BOARD NAME -> FORUM NAME -> TOPIC TITLE - though in this case it's not a clickable link, because it would be referring to the current page. In this case, the line is put both above and below the topic.
  41. Written and installed a patch to the PM system so that when an email is sent out alerting a user to a new PM, the username of the sender is mentioned in the Subject:

New Private message from "blah blah" received.
  42. Installation of PHPspell - modified slightly to use a common, shared database for holding the word list.
  43. Written and installed an interface to 'dictd' on the posting page. Options allow a word search based on "similar text" (spelling mistakes etc.) or on "parts of words" ("i.e. get all matches starting with xxx" or "get all matches ending with yyy") or on "sound alikes" (phonetic matches).
In all cases, a single match brings up a page with the dictionary meaning. Multiple word matches brings up a page with a list of matched words, which themselves link to their meaning.
  44. Simple idea - I changed the colour of the post subject on the "viewtopic/forum" page to be red to make it stand out a bit better.
  45. Written and installed 2 patches (mod-post_country & mod-post_city) to obtain the city and country details from each posts IP address (using GEOIP) and use it to put these details in the header of each individual post (this is then displayed in the form of a flag, with the alt and title text set to the countrys name). In addition, for admins, the alt and title text is set to the full details given by geoip, along with the posters host and ip. Also, the page 'viewip' shows the full geoip details alongside the other columns.
It is better basing the data per-post than per-user as users can move around ! This ensures that the post is marked with the country that post originated in (allowing for errors due to AOL etc. and proxies - and other database errors) - an extension to this is reading IP country overrides from my own database, and also the possiblity of adding ISP information from the RADB database.
Also now added my own override database to the GEOIP database - where I've (hopefully) fixed the AOL addresses outside the USA reporting to still be in the USA. I've also started adding relevent data for "Wales" in the case where the relevent IP addreses are definitely based in Wales. (For ADSL, this can't be done, because the UK's ADSL networks are national - any exchange-to-isp IP traffic is tunnelled so is effectively invisible to ADSL IP which simply appears to come out of it's national ISP's range)
  46. Written and installed changes where IP addresses are displayed to also store and display the resolved hostname (apache does the resolve anyway, so may as well use it) using the REMOTE_HOST CGI variable. - This is only really noticeable to admins and moderators.
  47. Rearranging the front index page to show logged in users above the forum, and to display all sections using the 'thick' background color in the section header (The old system used a thick background for the Forum box, but a thin header for other boxes - the same thin header that is used to sub-divide the forum into forum-categories, therefore it was inconsistent)
One of the headers, "who is online" doubled up as a link, which was again confusing. That link has now been moved to the overall_header, and the title is now simply a title.
  48. Written and added display of last logins, and "recent post" stats to the front page, for logged in users only. Possibly will add list of last 'chat' users too ?
  49. Integration of PJIRC and CGIIRC as a phpbb chat program - user names are based on members usernames.
  50. Installation of "statistics_mod" by Acyd Burn (acyd.burn@gmx.de) - Meik Sievertsen ( http://www.opentools.de/board )
  51. catflap "moods" - a user can add a mood with an expiry time which is then shown under their avatar on posts.
  52. Wrote and installed a 'statistics module' to show the top screen sizes being used.
  53. Installed "htmlwrap" (V1.5) by Brian Huisman AKA GreyWyvern (http://www.greywyvern.com/php.php) as a reliable html wrapper. Wrap with the '» ' string the message and mood_text strings in viewtopic.php, and also the message in 'catflap_donations.php'
  54. Modified all pages so that all user-supplied links have the attribute rel="nofollow" added to help thwart link spammers.
  55. Written and added a "last visible post" line to the main menu. So you can see immediately if
there's been a recent post, even if you haven't read all the messages (i.e. in the situation
where some icons are already orange)

  56. Moved stuff out of the web tree that has no need to be there :
    • The main configuration file
    • template cache directories
    • templates files
    • photo gallery data
    • phpbb include files
    • phpbb language files

  57. Installed (and fixed konqueror bugs) package mod-font_color_bar (by Ronak Bhatia <goonstk@yahoo.com> http://www.goons.tk)
  58. Installed (and tweaked) pacakge mod_post_numbers (by emrag < emrah987@hotmail.com > (Emrah Türkmen) www.canver.net)
  59. It goes without saying that all php files are owned by root, and readable only by the phpbb group. The board runs under a phpbb user, using a modified version of suexec which will only run files that are owned by either root, or the user itself. The user is jailed, and additionally, an open_basedir in the php.ini restricts access just to the home. Non php web files (images etc.) are owned by root, and only readable by "www" (the non su-exec'ed user group) All 'other' access is removed. Apache is configured with no directory index searching, and directories only have unix execute access, where possible.

  60. 20th May 2005 - Altered the front page to show the number of unread topics alongside each forum, in addition to the 'total topics' and 'total posts' etc. Also, seperated the forum-listing to show forums with containing unread topics first, followed by all other forums. This option was not liked by some, so it is a user-configurable option. -- this mod is for the Ptirhiik "mod-keep_unread" package.

  61. 15th June 2005 - Added the option for users to make their posts "non-public" - this means the post will never be shown to guests, or search-engines, irrespective of if it's in an open forum or not.

  62. 22nd September 2005 - Added code so that if any included image (from the gallery or by using the [img]...[/img] bbcode) is so large that it causes the users browser to overflow horizontally (i.e. causing horizontal scrollbars) then the image is instead automatically shrunk to fit the window - a header bar is added above the image allowing the image size to be normalized.

  63. October 2005 - Fixed problem with privmsg system by "Ptirhiik" where users are unable to read PM's to/from users that have since been deleted. This was because the code was attempting to look up the user_id of the PM in the users_table to get the username match.. Now, I store the username text in the PM message table along with the userid, and if the user has been deleted, this username field is used directly... A user_table lookup is still tried first, so that username changes are still 'tracked'

  64. Overhauled the front page, to allow each section to be minimised/maximised/closed - the effect is immediate, done in javascript, and setting a cookie in javascript. When the user next loads the forum, this cookie is parsed, and the changes made permanent in the users profile. A new profile menu was added accordingly to let people alter settings.

  65. December 2005 - Added admin panel to allow banner-ads to be displayed on the forum. Admins can add IMG or IFRAME banners, and can force a specific size for banners too. More than one banner can be added, and then a banner will be selected randomly each time the user loads a page.. A 'weighting' facility exists for each banner to give more priority to certain banners if required..... Admins can easily disable/enable/add/delete banners from the admin panel.

  66. December 2005 - Added admin panel to allow donate buttons to be added to the forum. If enabled, donate buttons appear, which direct the user to a page which contains a text description and 2 button links - one for credit-card donations, and one for non-credit-card donations. The description, and button link details are configured from the admin panel.

  67. December 2005 - 'entity' codes are now allowed in forum names, post subjects, and polls - not just messages as previously. This means that forumnames and post subjects can now have non-ascii characters in them.

  68. December 2005 - Added 'quick-click' access to some 'non-standard' characters on posting pages - these are displayed underneath the small emoticon selection over the left hand side, and selected in the same as emoticons are.

  69. January 2nd 2006 - Added a function loaded on the front page : "latest 10 topics" - this is a seperate function that is more or less a cut down version of my code in the latest_topics.php page

  70. February 3rd 2006 - Added bbcode and corresponding javascript and post buttons to add a "Topic link" and "Post Link" facility.

  71. February 3rd 2006 - Modified the posting_body.tpl and the Ptirhiik mod-profilcp signature-editor page to use common included templates for the common bits.

  72. February 16th 2006 - Filtered out non-activated users from all user-lists, user-stats etc. - also modified admin function "mass-delete users" to allow selection by activated or non-activated user, if required. I will eventually add code to auto-delete non-activated users after 24 hrs.

  73. February 16th 2006 - Added code to count total, and per-user access count to main index page

  74. March 6th 2006 - Added a new 'auth' field to forums: "view poster ip" - Previously, to view the IP address of a post poster, you'd have to either be admin, or moderator of that forum. Now, this field is set independently, as I host some forums where mods are meant to see IP's and some where they aren't. This allows this control, and also allows this option to be set on the user-group level. In light of this change, I've removed the "viewip" function from the "modcp.php" file to it's own seperate file.

  75. March 6th 2006 - Added a "catflap_debug" function - in any php file I can now put a line such as "catflap_debug (<VAR>)", and the contents of that variable will be displayed in a grey box for my user only - this makes it easier to debug/monitor 'live' code. - Multiple instances of this line are supported, as are all variable types (even arrays etc.)

  76. April 21st 2006 - 'Topic Mark' - Allows highlighting / unsubscribing from a topic. The following pages are affected : "viewforum", "unread topics", "latest topics", "latest posts". A new column appears on these pages, that normally contains a small 'o'. By clicking on it, the user can toggle this between the 'o', a tick (highlight topic) and a 'X' (unsubscribe topic). Unsubscribed topics are either never listed, or "low-lighted" in dark. Highlighted topics are highlighted, and also optionally listed first on the 'viewforum' page.
Javascript is used to allow the user to update their 'topic-marks' in realtime. The javascript sets a cookie which stores any of these changes. When ANY forum page is next loaded, this cookie is then parsed, and used to update the online topic-highlight table, and then the cookie is deleted. So, cookies are not used to store this information, just to pass changes along. Therefore, cookies must be enabled to allow user-clickable changing of the highlight setting.
Any topic that a user unsubscribes from is tracked by both the topic-id and the forum-id. This is so that if an unsubscribed topic is moved to another forum, it becomes visible again, on the assumption that the topic posts have possibly changed direction since the topic was unsubscribed to. highlighted topics are simply tracked by topic-id, so they will remain highlighted even if they are moved to another forum.
5 new profile options have been added under the new profile menu "catflap topic marking" that control whether :
    • A topic is auto-highlighted when you post into it. This is the default, and means that any topics you've contributed to are auto-highlighted
    • In viewforum, do you want 'highlighted' topics shown first, or simply keep the normal sort-order
    • Do you want the ability to unsubscribe from certain topics -- Off at default, so as not to confuse people.. In this case, the toggle just toggles between 'o' and a tick, and no other 'unsubscribe' options exist until the user enables this option.
    • Show unsubscribed topics in grey ? - Whether to show unsubscribed topics "low-lighted" as opposed to being removed from the listings alltogether.. Useful to set if there is a topic you want to resubscribe too, or you just want to check your unsubscribed-topics list.
    • When looking at topic listings, should highlighted topics highlight the row, as well as showing the tick? - Whether a highlighted topic should just show a tick, or also have the whole row highlighted when listing topics.

  77. April 26th 2006 - Modification to the advanced PM mod:
When you send a new private message, there is now a checkbox to set whether the recipient list is hidden or not. At default, it isn't hidden.
If the recipient list is not hidden, and you sent the message to many people, they will all see the full list of recipients. If it is hidden, they only get to see themselves listed on the recipient list.
When you view the messages you've SENT (typically in OUTBOX or SENTBOX), the list of recipients is always shown... In addition, in this situation, if the message was sent to more than one person, it will say next to "To:" (recipient list visible) or (recipient list hidden) , so as to remind you whether you sent the message with the recipient list set to hidden or not.

  78. April 26th 2006 - Banned the comma (,) from usernames!

  79. May 9th 2006 - Wrote an admin "permissions(all)" function to complement "permissions" - this option lists the permissions for ALL forums on one page, with an option to set the permissions for ALL forums. Also, I've improved the options for "simple mode" and also, if a 'simple mode' listing is shown, a box at the bottom shows the current pre-set options for simple mode.. All in all, it's a funky improvement on the 'set permissions' admin option --- and it's easy to install - it's basically a case of adding 2 files to your system -- the code file, and the template file. - nag me to make these available... this function ROCKS if you're setting up loads of forums, and, heck, it rocks even if you aren't!

  80. June 2006 - Added inline sourcing of various media types - flash, audio, youtube, mpg, avi, wmv etc. using a multi-tasked '[media]' tag.

  81. 14th July 2006 - 'topic summary popup' - On all pages that give a list of topics, moving the mouse over the topic subject will pop up a window containing a summary of the topics contents. (and on the latest_posts page, a post-summary can also be obtained by hovering over the post subject). This feature can be disabled in the users profile.

  82. 1st August 2006 - Added new bbcode tags:
    • [hline] - simply adds a horizontal line into the post
    • [fixed]...[/fixed] - allows you to insert text with non-collapsed spaces, and a fixed width font. Unlike "[code]...[/code]", this can be used inline, and also doesn't stop other bbcode working within it.
    • [align=NN] - A horizontal alignment system.. Each time [align=1] appears in a line, it will be left-justified so that all lines with [align=1] in them are horizontally aligned at the align point. To have another set of aligns aligned to each other, but independent from the first set, use [align=2] etc...

  83. 3rd August 2006 - Altered max length of topic/post subjects from 60 to 255 characters - this is mainly useful for the boards that have html-entity non-ascii letters in their posts - in this case a single letter can use around 7 characters.

  84. 6th March 2007 - Added bbcode for changing background colour of text etc. in a message, and also did a general tidy-up of the order/display of the posting buttons in the message/PM posting page

  85. 10th March 2007 - Added mod_rebuild_search_2.4.0a by chatasos

  86. 27th August 2007 - Added bbcode, and corresponding posting-buttons and javascript for overline [o], and strike-through [s]

  87. 16th May 2008 - Dan added a 'quick reply' ability to the 'viewtopic.php' page, that allows a quick reply to be made without all the bell-and-whistle options.

  88. July 2008 - Added "local posting time" to posts -- If someone posts a message when they are in a different timezone to you, the posting-time from THEIR point of view is also displayed in posts.

  89. 16th July 2008 - Improved support for inlining youtube videos via the [media] tag... - In addition, until the user opens the video, they are presented with a 3-frame splash gif extracted from the video! - Via the profile, users can elect to have either the 3-frame, a single frame, or no splash image at all. Also, posters can limit the type of splash image produced (handy when posting MANY youtube videos in one post) - as a 3 frame image is typically 340K whilst a single frame image comes in at about 30K

  90. 16th July 2008 - Added option in "posting" screen to turn your text upside-down (!) - Ok, so I was bored!

  91. 20th July 2008 - Added ".flv" support to the 'media' tags.

  92. 7th August 2008 - Added the ability for a user to set a default text colour, and/or a default background colour. These colours are then applied to all their postings without requiring bbcode tags each time. Each post holds the foreground/background colour information, so if a user changes their defaults, past posts will remain unaltered.

  93. 7th August 2008 - Changes to restrict when a user can edit or delete a post. The forum permissions panel has been changed to allow admins to set per forum if users are able to edit or delete their posts. Even if a user is not allowed to do so, a special condition is allowed as long as the post is less than 5 minutes old AND has not been replied to.

  94. 9th February 2009 - Changed 'viewtopic.php' so that whenever a "Topic_post_not_exist" message is sent (i.e. when a topic or post doesn't exist(!)) then the "Return code status" of the page is set to "HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found", so as to be cleaner for search engines etc. - Also made similar change to 'viewforum.php'. There are probably other pages which should get a similar modification.

  95. 13th March 2009 - Tidied up the html of 'viewtopic.php' so that if the post-subject as displayed at the top of each post and reply wraps to the next line, then instead make the whole post-subject start on a new line

  96. 13th March 2009 - Modified "karma" - Moved the karma +/- buttons to the top of each post, next to the 'quote' buttons. Also added a "Like This" and a "Dislike This" feature - where a person can opt to be marked as liking a post. Unlike karma, a users vote isn't anonymous, and also doesn't require any 'karma points to give' to work. However, if a user does have some 'karma points to give' then one will automatically be granted when a user 'likes' a post. If they then choose to 'don't like' a post, karma points are not in this case taken away from the user. A similar thing happens for "Dislike This" and "Don't dislike this", but in this case, the karma point is taken off, not added.

  97. 20th March 2009 - Added links to allow articles to be submitted via "addthis.com" to Facebook/Digg/Technorati/Reddit/Del.icio.us/Blinklist/Furl etc.

  98. 13th May 2009 - On successful post, no longer give the pointless "Your message has been entered successfully." page. Instead just go straight back to the post.

  99. 21st May 2009 - "Currently listening to..." information is on a new page, also such information is displayed under the users avatar on their posts. To use, the user needs a last.fm account, so that this information can be automatically fetched and updated.

  100. 12th June 2009 - Added '[spotify]...[/spotify]' and '[spotify=...]some text[/spotify]' code to allow Spotify links to be added to postings. Also, posting a spotify url direct will also be parsed automatically, even without the spotify tags.

  101. 14th June 2009 - Added a 'notifications' menu option.
